Hello, Dr. Dentist!
Tanzania has one of the lowest dentist-to-population ratios in the world, and rural children rarely see a dentist or learn about the importance of oral hygiene.
In the villages, children often lack fluoridated water or toothpaste, and families must travel long distances for care. A tooth extraction can cost several times a family’s daily income, so food and shelter are prioritized over dental care.
Many children arrive at Faraja with rotten teeth, leading to painful consequences that impact their ability to learn, and their overall health.
Oral care is a priority for Faraja. That’s why we have implemented a screening program for our students, in addition to emphasizing the importance of daily brushing and diet.
Students are eager to know: “when will my teeth be white again?”
Welcome Isaac!
Hongera to our school nurse, Neema, on the birth of baby Isaac! Neema has been a devoted member of our staff for years, and her love for the children extends beyond clinical care to just about every activity on the campus, from career camp, to choir, to the bakery operation. She heals and brings wisdom and joy to all the Faraja community. We can’t wait to see Isaac take his first steps on campus!
On The Road with Faraja Forward
Faraja Forward concluded its third quarter with an impressive scope of accomplishments:
571 children received medical attention and rehabilitation services, and their caregivers received counseling to support their children through physical therapy, nutrition, medication and positive parenting.
58 Community Health Workers— the vital frontline providers of health services in rural communities—were trained on disability identification, disability management and prevention, and child protection.
9 Government Disability Committees were formed for the first time at the district and ward levels, and trained by Faraja Forward to coordinate services and ensure policy enforcement so that children with special needs realize their full human rights under Tanzanian law.
41 primary and secondary schools and 30 government and religious leaders engaged with Faraja Forward to learn about disability and inclusion, child protection, and ways the community can help to ensure that children with special needs are granted their full human rights.
And, Faraja Forward’s wheelchair program continues to procure and deliver wheelchairs to children in the most remote villages, literally lifting them off the floor and from their mother’s backs, transforming the quality of life for all.
A gift of $400 allows Faraja Forward to purchase a wheelchair and change a child’s life forever!

Dear Faraja Community:
My name is Sara and I am a Special Education Teacher from the UK, with over 13 years of experience in the education sector. I am also a qualified SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) and have worked in the UK and UAE.
My journey into teaching was inspired by a family member with additional needs. I recently founded Inclusion at Heart, a UK-based service dedicated to supporting children with Special Educational Needs through 1:1 tutoring.
Recently, I had the privilege of visiting Faraja, a school I discovered while researching inclusive education across the region. I was eager to learn more about the incredible work Faraja is doing within its community. During my four-day visit, I spent time getting to know the students, teaching English through games, songs and conversations. I also observed lessons and had the honour of delivering teacher training on Strategies for Supporting Students with SEN, as well as visiting a Wheelchair Outreach Clinic in the community.
My time at Faraja was a truly enriching experience and reaffirmed my commitment to ensuring that inclusion remains at the heart of education—everywhere in the world.
