Don and Joann Tolmie, founders of Faraja Primary School, were recently chosen to receive a Daily Point of Light Award.
Points of Light was inspired by the 1989 inaugural address of President George H.W. Bush. In 1990, President Bush established the Daily Point of Light Award for individuals making a difference by demonstrating how “a neighbor can help a neighbor.” The award recognizes “ordinary people who reach beyond themselves to touch the lives of those in need, bringing hope and opportunity, care and friendship.”
For those who know the Tolmies, this award is no surprise; they have always been committed to serving people in their community. During their first visit to Tanzania in 1999, the Tolmies felt called to help some new “neighbors” – children with physical disabilities. They saw the challenges that people with disabilities face in a developing country, and they were inspired by the desire of the Lutheran church in Tanzania to build a school to meet the needs of disabled children.
Don and Joann’s compassion and enthusiasm led to the opening of Faraja Primary School in 2001 and the establishment of the Faraja Fund Foundation in 2006. As a result, hundreds of Tanzanian children with physical disabilities have received quality education and medical care.
But Don and Joann haven’t done it alone! Faraja Primary School was built and funded with the support of the entire Tolmie family and many friends. The Tolmies are proud to work with their children, grandchildren, friends, and donors across the United States to help Faraja Primary School students and graduates grow toward a lifetime of opportunity, independence, and dignity.
Today, Faraja Primary School serves one hundred students with physical disabilities by providing quality education and medical care. In addition, sixty-five Faraja School graduates are continuing their education in secondary school, vocational training, and college.
Don and Joann Tolmie’s vision is a reality today thanks to the generosity of people like you. With your help, the Faraja Fund Foundation will continue to support and expand the life-changing work of Faraja Primary School. Join us today, and help us carry on Don and Joann’s amazing legacy of service!
